Mimecast Enhances Email Security with Strategic HRM Acquisitions

Email security providers are increasingly integrating human risk management (HRM) tools to enhance their data loss prevention (DLP) capabilities. Mimecast has recently sharpened its focus on HRM by acquiring Code42, a provider of insider risk tools, marking its second HRM acquisition this year, following the purchase of Elevate Security in January.

This strategic shift aligns Mimecast with competitors like Proofpoint, Sophos, and Barracuda Networks, who have also ventured into HRM by combining messaging security with user training.
According to Verizon’s “2024 Data Breach Investigations Report,” insiders were involved in 68% of breaches in 2023, with projections suggesting this could rise to 90% in 2024. HRM solutions are emerging to help organizations assess human risk and evaluate the effectiveness of training programs.

Following the Elevate acquisition, Marc van Zadelhoff became Mimecast’s CEO, charged with expanding its HRM portfolio and partnering with Code42 to integrate its Incydr tool. This integration allows for better management of users engaged in risky behaviors and enhances the detection of data exfiltration activities. Van Zadelhoff emphasized that their partnership revealed a strong joint customer interest and added significant value to identifying high-risk segments.

Mimecast plans to maintain the integrity of both product portfolios while developing a unified human risk dashboard. At the upcoming Black Hat USA Conference, the company will showcase new AI tools designed to detect exfiltration risks when employees use generative AI platforms.
